The Muse: February 2016

Month Two of Two Thousand Sixteen. What have I accomplished?

That's no longer relevant. What matters is whom have I gotten to know a little better, how many kisses and hugs have I shared with my daughter, how many random acts of kindness have I participated in.

Productivity needs a serious vacation in our society.

The other day my little one and I went rollerblading at my alma mater for three (three!) hours. We explored corridors, sidewalks, paths, roads. We wove in and out of groups of Chinese families gathering on campus for their New Year celebrations. It struck me how fluid this sport is, how easily it transports you to that state of mind we call "runner's high"—can we say "rollerblader's high"? That, despite all the near-falls I had because of all those acorns (Seriously, how many of these darned acorns can possibly fall off trees? Are all the squirrels asleep on the job?) and twigs and cracks in the pavement that kept popping out of nowhere.

And we went to see Kung Fu Panda Three, in 3D. (No not in our rollerblades.) And I enjoyed it. I gave myself to the story completely and fully like I've never done for a kid's movie. Or any movie, lately, for that matter. Nevermind that it is a kid's movie. It's funny, irreverent, of course extremely well animated, but also incredibly profound.

The core message of the film is that you reach your true power only once you align with your ch'i, your soul energy.

Isn't that what all the self-help books and business blogs are trying to say, but in many more words and with much less humor?

Years ago when the first movie in the series came out, I was, in a word, prejudiced. A panda doing kung fu? Ridiculous, I scoffed. It took becoming a mother to go see Kung Fu Panda One and Two, and the long-awaited Three. Now I want to study kung fu myself. And in a bizarre yet perfectly logical confluence of energies and events, my experience of this film was directly informed by a book that mixes the quest for conscious fulfillment with quantum physics (see below in Making the Scene). And very probably vice versa, as well.

Funny how being acutely aware of everything moving through your life brings you the answers to questions you didn't know you were asking.

Honor your ch'i. Live passionately.

The only thing more satisfying than seeing your book's title up in lights is seeing your fellow writers' work celebrated. I'm thrilled to share with you two upcoming books from two very different authors, both dear friends of mine. We became friends through our work, through the shared passion of putting thought and wonder into words, and those words to paper.

For pure transparency, my team and I have sprinkled some magic editing and design dust on their books, and that's why I know a thing or two about them—but it's all their work, their ideas, their passion.

Ruth Varner's new anthology of stories and poems, titled Vintage Blend, takes you on a journey through childhood memories, the pain and promise of friendship, and the twists and turns of ordinary lives turned poignant and powerful.

I'm a battle-hardened editor, but some of Ruth's stories brought tears to my eyes.

Also watch for Joseph Rain's upcoming book on spirituality, science, philosophy, and quantum physics. Yes, you read that right. Quantum physics and spirituality. Heady stuff! The trouble with it is, there's only 95% probability the words you're reading are actually there. (grin)

Here's one of my favorite quotes from the book: "Love has nothing to do with falling; it has everything to do with growing."

The book is not out yet, as we've just finished round two of edits, but I couldn't help but give you a little peek under the curtains.

Our Launch Day Prizes page is up!

In last month's issue of The Muse, Max and Itzel only told you about one of the prizes. A lot can happen in a month! Now we've got four, with one mystery prize. Ah, how the chocolate... er, plot thickens!

Two of the prizes are location-based, so please check the page if you've purchased a copy of The Jaguar and the Cacao Tree or are planning on doing so.

On Launch Day, March 22, we'll draw the winners' names from three separate bowls, and if you want to be considered for New York or Guatemala, we need to know so we can include your name in the right cacao bowl.

This concludes our public chocolate service announcement. Go forth and smother your loved one in real, dark chocolate this Valentine's day!
