The Muse: May 2017 : For you, Mom

The Muse

You are either wondering what in the world happened to The Muse and that gal who writes it, or you haven't missed it because you've been so busy.

Well, that's exactly what's happened to me. "Busy" is an understatement. A large-scale global project on top of our publishing efforts. Did you notice the Earth has been spinning slower for the past two months? Certainly feels like that to me. No exaggeration to say I feel like I've been living on another planet. So deeply immersed in this project that I've even started dreaming about it.

And it's not over, but I have summoned all of my willpower and energy, tonight when I've got a killer sinus headache and three international launches tomorrow, to send this issue, by the divine powers that be.

So why did I take on all this work, you ask. Because it's one of the most fascinating, challenging, and game-changing projects I've ever been involved in. It's the cutting edge of the cutting edge, and it could change the way all of us interact with technology. You bet I want to be right there in the middle of it to infuse that interaction with all the right substance and intentions.

No more dumbing things down, I say. No more demeaning headlines, offensive or intolerant content. We all deserve much more than that from our content creators and tech innovators.

Because if we writers don't step out of our comfort zone and take on something much bigger than us, something that really can—and very likely will—shape our society, culture, and the very way we communicate, we won't have any say in the broader conversation. And that conversation really needs us. Right now.

So please accept my apologies for being so MIA for the past two months. Hey, at least your Inbox got some rest too, from all those eLetters that keep pouring in. :P

May 14th is Mother's Day here in the U.S., Canada, Colombia and a slew of other countries. It's May 10th in México, and May 28th in France, Morocco and Tunisia.

In honor of all of our mothers, grandmothers, and mothers-to-be, we're celebrating by paying it forward—to the people who grow some of mom's favorite food in the whole wide world.

Yes, CHOCOLATE.

We've got our lovely Book-to-Bar bundles on a nice discount, and a part of the revenues goes to the small craft chocolate makers who in turn support the cacao farmers in Latin America and Africa and protect the ecosystems that support heirloom cacao.

But we also created a third bundle that I think Mom will really, really like.

Books are great, but let's face it. Chocolate wins over literature every time. And I say this being a life-long dedicated author! But you cannot fight 10 million years of evolution (that's how old the cacao plant is). We are biologically wired for this food.

So go on. Think it. Say it.

"Why not just get the chocolate??"

In celebration of Mom, and of the world's most breathlessly exhilarating food, we put together a heady bundle of bars from the three chocolate makers we're working with: Askinosie, Harper Macaw and Firefly Chocolate. I call it the "Chocolate Triple Threat."

You get to choose which flavor you want from each maker, so each bundle is unique to your taste. And, and... you get 17% off, through May 14.

So get a chocolate bundle for Mom. Because if she finds out you had the chance and you missed it, she'll let you hear about it for years to come.

Happy Mother's Day to all the dear, sweet, wonderful mums out there! Especially you Mom!

Too much work to do events this quarter, but I did manage to squeeze in a special request for a Chocolate Quest workshop at a local Montessori school earlier in April. I had three groups of middle school children back-to-back. There was not a speck of chocolate dust left, the kids were in heaven, and I came home thoroughly exhausted (how DO you teachers do it??) but happy.

This summer, I'll be camping in the redwoods with my daughter, working on the next book in the "Max and the Code of Harvests" series. Finally! It's time.
