The Muse :: Welcome to The Muse

The Muse

Once upon a time, literary authors lived on their own little private islands far away from other human beings. They didn’t eat and they didn’t sleep, but they drank insane amounts of coffee and alcohol, smoked their lungs to shreds, and got no exercise whatsoever. And they used really old computers and saved their work on floppy drives.

Fast forward a few centuries. Okay, years.

Today’s author is an outgoing, socially uber-connected, mountain-climbing powerhouse that imbibes staggering amounts of kale juice and avoids cigarettes like the plague, and produces thousands of words of stunning prose every day starting at 5am.

Scratch that.

Today’s author is not just an author. S/he is an entrepreneur, a publishing expert, a researcher of life, a reluctant if not awkward publicist, a café regular and/or a parent with a fragmented schedule that only permits time for writing before or after the kids’ bedtime.

Somewhere between these two polarities lies the writer’s world.

Welcome to mine.

Welcome to The Muse, the eLetter that puts you in direct contact with the worlds we writers spin into existence on a daily basis. It's enthralling, frustrating, inspiring, totally maddening and so enigmatic even we creatives can't figure it out.

So what can you expect from The Muse? Well, the structure and schedule are fairly simple. You receive an issue every orange Tuesday (if you want to know what on Earth an orange Tuesday is, read about it here).

There's cool stuff you can download and even cooler stuff I send to random people on the list on special occasions. Plus, you get a special gift on your birthday! More on all that below.

Each issue starts off with a "Musing of the Moment"—observations on the realities of life, especially those we writers deal with, followed by two or three various topics—could be projects I'm working on, things other people are working on, or simply something that caught my eye. Finally, if I'm doing any events or talks, those come at the end.

You also get the rest of The Muse welcome package:

First, watch for a sneak-peek into the reason why the titles of all the segments of The Muse start with the letter "M." As with most things writers do, it's no accident. I swear you'll never guess.

A few days after that, you'll get an insider's look into the underlying theme of my work, which I don't publish anywhere on my web site or in my books. This is something I'm sharing only with subscribers of The Muse.

Ok so what's this bit about your birthday? If you email me your birthday (just the day and month), I'll send you a little something on your special day. What will it be, you ask? Well that would spoil the purpose of a birthday surprise, now wouldn't it?

And let's not forget the real reason you subscribed. The chance to win, totally randomly, a bar of fine chocolate. Or something else chocolatey or literary. I did, after all, write a novel about the history of cacao—believe me I did a lot of "real-world" research. But ya gotta stay subscribed to get these actual physical things, b/c my little randomizing algorithm only chooses people from the "active" list. And then I need to email you to ask you for your mailing address.

So, that's it—enjoy and see you next orange Tuesday!

~ Birgitte
