The Muse: June 2018

The Muse

I'd love nothing more than to wax poetic about the loveliness of summer, lemonades and beach umbrellas, and chasing crabs in the sand. How I truly wish that's all there was to write about.

But the world is getting more complicated and challenging, and that takes priority over poetry. Or does it...

Does it feel to you, the way it does to me, that the gush of atrocities in the news is like a firehose torn off at the base? It feels surreal to live in a place where multi-million dollar neighborhoods sit right next to lines of RV's inhabited by people no longer able to afford rent. And those lines of parked RV's are growing. I see it with my own eyes on the way to work every day.

But that's just one issue, very visible here in the San Francisco Bay Area. What about the rest of the country, and the world: the constant shootings, the raids and deportations, the tearing apart of families at the border. Or the ongoing human rights abuses in the Middle East and numerous other places. The white collar crimes, the financial scandals, the fraud, corruption and mass asset theft. The insidious co-opting of morals, faith, and culture for personal and political agendas and greed.

I've spent more than a few morning commutes recently in tears listening to reports of immigrant children being forcibly taken from their parents. As outraged parents post on Twitter, what has our country become?

But the question is not what "our country" has become. It's what is being done TO it.

The answer then becomes extraordinarily clear: what can we do FOR it.

I'm thrilled to give you a special sneak preview of our brand new CACAO MUSE YouTube Channel. Many months in the making, and many weeks in the baking, the Cacao Muse Channel brings you stories about the makers of craft chocolate, told in the most eminently consumable media format: the video.

The inaugural episode is about bean-to-bar craft chocolate maker Harper Macaw, whose founders I have had the pleasure to work with on our first Book-to-Bar campaign. Not that I ever judge a book by its cover, but this company has some of the most beautiful packaging you'll ever see on a chocolate bar, beans down.

We still have work to do to launch the channel properly, but my co-host and I just couldn't wait any longer. Like dipping your finger in the cookie dough, a sneak peek is always warranted.

We're already working on Episode #2, and have shot 3 others. Plan is to release a new Cacao Muse show every month.

Oh, who's my co-host? Ha, you'll just have to watch the first episode...

And if there's a chocolate maker you really love and would like to have us profile, let us know in the comments.

Ok, enough talk. Go watch!

Every summer I take a break from talks and presentations. But even as I've managed to clear my speaking calendar, I've taken on a new thing: judging chocolate.

I can't share the details until next month, when the competition is over, but yes, I have been invited to serve as a JUDGE in a chocolate competition and could not feel more blessed. Perfect way to put all of my educating others on how to taste chocolate, to a real test, with real < gulp > consequences.

The package of entries has already arrived... left at my front door melting in the sun. I whisked it away just in time...

Deciding among all these breathtaking entries will be difficult. So many incredible chocolates, so many flavors, textures, and after-tastes. But it will also be very interesting to see what the final choices are. Stay tuned...
