The Muse :: Issue Twenty-Two :: June 2014 :: Visions of Summer

The Muse

Ahhh, summer. The sun, the sand, the sea, the clear blue sky. Toes sinking into salty froth at the water's edge. Picnics in the park. Ripe berries dripping their plump flavors all over your lap. A book in one hand, nice cool drink (lemonade or mojito?) in the other, swinging together in that lazy lullaby hammock in your garden.

That is, if you're a reader. You get the fun, easy part of savoring the labor and the creative effort it takes to produce a seductive narrative, an unforgettable story, a book you cannot put down.

Summers for authors mean summer book releases—i.e., long hours at our desks, finishing up those "supplemental" sections, calling all those book reviewers, fighting with last-minute font changes, trying to figure out what else we can possibly say about our upcoming book in 140 characters or whatever.

This summer, I'm putting an end to all that. I do have to finish a supplemental section or two, but I'm swapping book reviews for stories about visionaries. My latest novella, fittingly called "The Visionary," is about Vision. Vision with a capital "V." The kind of profound intelligence and insight that understand and empathize with the world we live in—and then change it for the better.

Yes, I'm going to promote this book, but this time not with reviews. This time, it's not going to be just me on the book release stage. I'm taking a few people with me. People who are harnessing their passion, brilliance, and efforts on improving lives, communities, nations.

So if you know of an unsung visionary, someone quietly (or not so quietly) working on a project, initiative, product, or service whose purpose is to improve and enhance our world in some way, or if you are that person yourself, and you'd like more than your immediate circles to know about what you're doing, email me and I'll send you an ARC of the book ("Advance Review Copy") and instructions for submitting your story.

Everyone knows about the big names, the Maya Angelous and Elon Musks of the world. It's time to open up the stage for the songs still unheard.

Last month we met, for the first time, a new word in the English language: METAPHORMOSIS, the fusion of metaphor and metamorphosis.

Metaphormosis is the process by which one metaphor shifts or blends into another. This happens all around us all the time, if we just slow down and breathe.

We have our first guest metaphormosis story: it's a post by Lorraine Jericevic of the UK about a bag of sacred corn given to her by a Hopi man, and the unexpected cycle of giving that it inspired.

What's the nested set of metaphors in Lorraine's story? Read it and post your thoughts in the comments!

Do you have a Metaphormosis story? I'd love to hear it. If it's a true Metaphormosis story, we'll publish it in a future issue of "The Muse."

Ever wondered what's the difference between the Paleo diet and the Vegan lifestyle? And what organic chocolate has to do with either of them? Well, you're going to find out—next week!

I've been invited by Denet Lewis, host and producer of High Five Fitness, a motivational fitness television show, for a roundtable on this rather captivating subject. I have a feeling we're going to have a lot of fun.

Show times will be announced next week, so check your local listings after Monday, June 16th. If you're not local to the Bay Area, no worries. The producers will post the show on YouTube and the High Five Fitness web site—and I'll be sure to send those links out through the social mediasphere.

Sorry, you won't get to see me do my extra special 80% dark chocolate downward dog pose this time. :-)

REPORT ON "THE STORY OF CHOCOLATE"
This event took place on May 10, 2014

The "Story of Chocolate" event at Hidden Villa last month was fantastic. All the kids were engaged, excited, and very curious about all the things they didn't know about chocolate. We did a cacao bean treasure hunt, a True/False cacao history quiz, a blindfolded "How to read the label" activity, and finished up with a gloriously messy chocolate/fruit fondue.

I couldn't take photos of the little ones (for obvious privacy considerations) but I did manage to immortalize the irresistible chocolate bars before they melted in the heat: check out the photos!
