The Muse :: Issue Twenty-Three :: July 2014 :: The World in the Cup of Your Hand

The Muse

Did you see the thrilling World Cup match between Colombia and Uruguay? Or the one between the US and Belgium (not so thrilling)? Did you heart break like mine did when Colombia was inexplicably denied a perfectly sound goal that would have carried them to a tie in the quarterfinals?

There are obvious (to those of you who know me a little) reasons why I'm cheering for Colombia, their dance moves not the least of those. But while we palpitate about the world's best sporting event in the entire history of the entire human race (FIFA notwithstanding), let me pull you away just a little further up north, to Guatemala.

There's no World Cup in Guatemala, nor did they qualify for the games this year, but this little country holds a cup that has been traveling the world for many more centuries: chocolate.

It was the search for the origins of this unassuming yet irresistible cup of heaven for my little novel "The Origins: Chocolate" that brought me in touch with Bio-Itzà, an unassuming non profit organization in the Lake Petén region of Guatemala.

Its director, Don Reginaldo Chayax Huex, personally translated the Itzà Maya passages in my book—you might remember my determination to helping to bring this lovely Maya language back from the brink of extinction—and as he has helped me, now it's time for me to help him.

You see, Don Regi has been having some fairly serious health issues, among them cardiac problems. When I heard from Don Aderito, the School Director, that Don Regi is unable to pay his medical bills, I thought to myself, what are we if not a loving, supportive international community? We can do this. We can raise the $1200 he needs.

So I put up a page on our MCP site. Go there. Read a little more. Drop in a few bucks. Your act of kindness will go a long way... all the way to Guatemala where a wonderful Maya man is fighting the good fight to maintain his health and continue leading his organization.

Quick update on all things literary in my world:

"The Origins: Chocolate" is now moving through editing at the publisher's, woo hoo! I've finally put up a little info on my site, too. In the "upcoming titles" section. You guys get to be the very first to see this! I'm getting chocolate shivers.

"The Visionary" has gone through editing and is now in production. Many of you have been asking me when it's coming out. The answer is... early this fall. Stay tuned! Also in production is a new web interface that will feature individual stories of unsung visionaries from all walks of life, people dedicating their lives to making the world we live in a better place.

Next, a very special project. "Tsunami: Images of Resilience" is a book of photographs honoring the resilience and indomitable spirit of the survivors of the Indian Ocean Tsunami of December 26, 2004. Back in March 2005, we sent Daniel Root, a freelance photographer for Nike, to India and Thailand to document the extraordinary stories of survival in the staggering aftermath of the tsunami. Yep, the tenth anniversary is already here.

Here's the important part: if you know of an organization still working on the ground in the regions affected by the Tsunami, LET. ME. KNOW. Part of the proceeds from this book will go to support the communities that still need help.

And, as if that weren't anticipation enough, we're preparing for our very first crowdfunded game. Let's call it "Project X" for now. Can't reveal details yet, but I can share that it is indeed a game for mobile devices and that it has to do with ancient cultures, challenging your mind, and completely redefining an old game genre--and YOU, as always, will be the first to know when we ramp up.

Right now, we're still deciding whether to go with Kickstarter or Indiegogo. Anyone have any direct experience with either platform—or heaven/hell stories from friends? Do tell, we'd really appreciate any input.

And if you'd like to be one of our Ambassadors, standing right there with us at the prow of the ship when we set sail, please get in touch.

HIGH FIVE FITNESS TV SHOW IS ONLINE!
Last month I was part of a roundtable TV program on the Paleo diet vs the Vegan lifestyle. Rounded out, of course, by organic chocolate—check out the video of the live broadcast!

Warm thanks go to the wonderful producer of High Five Fitness, Denet Lewis, and his crew who were a total dream to work with.

My fellow guests Sarah Pate, Michelle Brown and I were even treated to a drop-dead-delicious paleo-style dinner after the show.

Now, if you see a hair out of place, I really need to know about it.
