The Muse :: Issue Three :: November 2012

The Muse

I've lived on the East Coast. I've gone through my fair share of storms and hurricanes, but nothing like Katrina, nothing like Sandy, in the sense that my life was never quite impacted the same way as the millions who lost power, a way to get to work, their homes, memories, or in a few cases, their very lives.

Nature gives us pause.

Events like superstorms (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanos, and so on) remind us, every time, that her power is far greater, far stronger, and far more staggering than anything we humans can possibly concoct. Including nuclear weapons.

Yes, we can obliterate our planet. Yes, we can extinguish most of the living things on the Earth (we're well on our way on that one). But that's not power. That's ignorance, stupidity, greed, lunacy.

Power commands respect, balance, strength, direction.

Think about it. False power belittles, humiliates, disempowers and demoralizes. Real power empowers, supports, guides, uplifts. It may destroy, clean out, raze that which is old, irrelevant or unusable, but in the process it refreshes, rejuvenates, redirects and invigorates.

Sounds a little like spring cleaning, doesn't it. Yeah.

This is the kind of power we need more of in our lives—on the corporate, professional, political, economic, societal and personal levels. True, natural power.

Get out there and use it!

The holidays are approaching faster than any of us really want to believe. What, another year nearly gone?

If you haven't started thinking about gifts yet, don't. Because I've got a very special proposal for you.

My book "The Serpent and the Jaguar" has a companion musical CD, Camino del Sol. Beautifully composed by European musical group Balanza, it features 20 songs, one for each of the 20 day signs of the Mayan Calendar. Imagine a nice hot cup of your favorite tea or a glass of wine, the warm Latin rhythms of Camino del Sol, and a book about sacred time. Makes you want to call in sick for an entire week...

But imagine this lovely experience also for your loved ones. So instead of another wall calendar, another yellow duck tie, or an Amazon gift card, give your loved ones a The Serpent and the Jaguar/Camino del Sol Limited Edition gift set... we have just 30 left. Each set is beautifully hand-wrapped for the holidays, I sign each and every one by hand... and we'll ship it straight to your loved one, friend, or colleague. Or a perfectly random stranger.

Send your loved one a giftset today.

What's on this month? Lots of time dedicated to writing, a panel discussion, and planning for next year.

November 3, 2012 8am Pacific/11am Eastern: I'm hosting an online panel of authors to talk about the post-2012 world. The panel discussion is in connection with Dr. Jim Young's anthology titled "2013—The Beginning is Here" and our work on the Mayan Calendar Portal. We'll discuss what the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar means to modern society and how we can each co-create a better, safer, healthier world.

We've had a massive overflow of signups (the attendance limit is 100, and there are close to 300!) so unfortunately we can't take any more registrations. BUT, but, we will have a recording of the event which I'll post in the next eLetter.

December 2012: I'll be gone most of December on a writing retreat. Where? Here's a hint: one of the world's most breathtaking countries. Seriously.

January 2013: Mystery month. Stay tuned!

February 21, 2013: I've been invited to give a talk at the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at Stanford University on the Mayan Calendar and living in sacred time. What a treat to be able to give back to my alma mater this way.

This event is open to the public so if you'd like to come,
email me as CLAS won't be posting it till next year.
