The Muse :: Issue Thirty-Two :: April 2015 :: The Biggest Investment is You

The Muse

I know. The subject line of this month's "The Muse" says it all. I really don't need to go on, or even write the rest of this eLetter. But then it wouldn't be a "musing of the moment," would it. And yet, and yet... once I start on this topic it's like Iguazú Falls. Impossible to stop.

Luckily, I have a curfew tonight. :-)

Your biggest, most important investment is you. Everything you think, everything you eat and drink. Every decision you make, every language you learn, every relationship you keep. Take care of yourself, and you can work wonders for those around you.

There's the intellectual/mental stuff, like education, research, writing, solving problems, even that heated conversation with a friend or loved one. Or, um, soon-to-be-ex boss.

There's the emotional/psychological stuff, like friendship, love, compassion, forgiveness, meditation, laughter. Snuggles with your little one.

And there's the physical stuff, pure and simple. You know, exercise, nutrition, sleep, posture, flossing, blah blah. Well, it's not all blah blah, as I almost learned the hard way.

I'd started to take my body for granted, and it pushed back. Here's the story of a U-turn I couldn't refuse.

We all know this. We all know we're supposed to do X, Y, and Z. But too often we just don't. We say we don't have time, we don't have money, space, awareness, motivation, whatever. But we DO. You'd be surprised how much of what impacts you on a daily basis you actually can control, reshape, and redirect for your benefit rather than that breathless rat race too many of us are caught up in.

So before you buy your next stock, take stock in you.

~ Birgitte

Last week I received an email from a fellow writer I met some time ago through one of the many writers' communities I frequent. Someone I've never met in person, but a kindred spirit and an extraordinarily supportive friend. She emailed to wish me a happy Easter and to say my blog posts at The Write Practice are sorely missed.

"I understand why you had to take a break," she wrote, "but the impact of your contributions was enormous. Your professional advice laced with buckets of inspiration was a lightning bolt online."

I thanked her personally, but I also want to thank her, and many more of you I've come to know over time, here, now. You guys exemplify the camaraderie, support, and friendship that soaks the loneliest profession in the world in joy.

It's people like you that literally make a writer's life worth living.

Can't keep it in anymore. For the past month, my webmaster has been implementing a new feature on my web site. It's just about ready to go.

Drum roll please!

Introducing Theobroma libris, the automatic chocolate book printer! Now you can get my books 3D-printed in organic dark chocolate. And for a small additional fee, I'll send you fresh raspberries embedded in the jacket.

If only. That sure would give "the pleasure of reading" a new meaning.

So maybe not a chocolate printer (yet!), but the other part is true. We built an ecommerce platform. If you go to the individual pages of my books and short stories, you'll see little cart buttons just below the publication info.

So why go to all this trouble? Simple, really. I got tired of being able to sign books only at events. Of not being able to thank my readers personally for spending a little of their time with my stories. Of not being able to offer both epub and mobi files for a single price—because if you want both formats, at the big boys you have to buy them separately, and pay twice.

And I got tired of not being able to toss in whatever goodies I feel like as extra gifts. Those goodies are still baking, but come next month you'll know more.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still friends with Amazon, Apple's iBookstore, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and any other retailer that carries my books. But now I'm sitting down at their table.

So how about a book printed in chocolate?

I also got tired of randomly keeping everyone updated on what's next in my writing and producing world. So from now on, any such updates will live here in a new section of "The Muse"—the "Making Of" section.

  • Historical fiction novel about a boy, a girl, and the history of chocolate: now in editing. Still deciding on a title.
  • Received a manuscript from a new author for a children's book we might publish. That would be fun!
  • Mystery book: storyline in development.
  • Interactive educational game: prototype now in production, stay tuned! We're looking for beta testers so email me for more details if you're interested.
