The Muse

Why do we all despise bureaucracy?

Is it the rigid, unbending rules and requirements that don't seem to have been updated since the steam engine, the unconscionable number of trees cut down in the name of compliance, or the inherent mistrust of every living breathing human being to do the right thing the right way?

Well, if every single person did do the right thing the right way I suppose we wouldn't need half the agencies we have today.

The irony is, in certain respects and within certain layers of the economy and the legal structures of our society, things work. But on too many layers, even today after all the supposed practice we've had over the centuries, things do not. Chalk it up to chaos—the intricate and innumerable connections that tie ego, attitude, culture, race, religion, politics, power, and just about every other human trait, desire, identifier, and physical reality all together.

We all know what happens when rules and regulations are subverted, corrupted, or simply ignored.

But that's a discussion that can easily turn into a book, and in fact already has. Many books, many articles, many discussions. The bottom line for most of us is striking a manageable balance between what we have to do and when we have to do it, and what we want to do and the time we want to dedicate to it.

In my latest blog post I talk about one aspect of the bureaucracy that permeates our daily lives: the restrictive effect of deadlines and to-do lists, and how to free yourself from it all on a daily basis, at least long enough each day to maintain your sanity.

This isn't the only way of course, so please share your favorite in the comments!

Remember the historical fiction/fantasy novel about the history of chocolate that I was working on a year ago? Finished, I should say. Yes, the same one that has been waiting for a publication date.

Well, the aroma of publication wafts ever closer. We are in editing NOW. Dare I say we have a timeframe from the publisher! Late spring 2015. That's all I will say... until the book is in the can, so to speak.

But there is a new mystery manuscript to haunt your curiosity now. I'll give you a few hints:

  • It's in a genre I have not previously published in
  • It has a mystery collaborator
  • The narrative promises to be rather colorful
Care to guess what it's about and who I'm working with?

You know I cannot sit still and only write and publish books. My team and I also develop and publish mobile applications, and our latest one that we're working on is a wonderful educational game for kids and parents alike. Very excited about it.

Perhaps more exciting still is the opportunity to get on board before we release it, and be part of our street team. Especially if you're a parent and care about what kinds of games your little ones are playing on that tablet/eReader/mobile phone.

This can be any number of things depending on how you'd like to get involved:

  • Help beta test the game and send us feedback
  • Spread the word to friends and other fellow parents when the game is ready to be released
  • Write reviews or blog posts about your experience with the game
  • We're open to other ideas so feel free to suggest!
You also get your name in the credits (if you agree, of course).
