The Muse :: Issue Thirty-Four :: June 2015 :: Who wants a taste of chocolate

The Muse

What would you do for a chance to jump into a vat of dark chocolate? Too decadent?

How about a lifetime supply of the most heavenly organic chocolate you have never even dreamed of. Too good for words?

Ok. Here's something you can definitely do without going off the charts: beta read my chocolate novel.

The book is going through its last and final edit, and the first half is done and aching to be read by someone other than its literary mother. A few of you already have those first few chapters in your hands, and feedback so far has been great.

So what does it mean to "beta read" a chocolate novel?

The writers among you will know. It's a sneak preview of the book. You get to say anything, anything at all about any aspect of the story, the characters, the voice, the tone, what type of chocolate you like, and whether you dig the whole dark green sock thing.

Umm... dark green socks... in a novel about chocolate??

Yes, you read that right. But you'll only know what I'm talking about if you read those first few pages.

One more very important thing. I'm especially interested in middle grade beta readers (10-13 year olds), since that's the age of the main characters. So even if you're not interested for yourself or just don't have time, but you know a middle school student or the parents of one, pass this eLetter on!

And yes, yes, yes there will be chocolate.

Those of you who know me know I live in a rarefied part of the world called Silicon Valley. Apart from the impossible becoming reality just about every other day here, including the revenue you have to generate every month just to survive, it's a wonderfully vibrant, driven and active community. This means there are more panel discussions, meetups, conferences, and events of all kinds than you could possibly fit into your day.

For parents who are also writers who are also entrepreneurs, who need to carry on an active professional life, it can be tough balancing it all. Granted, that's true regardless of your location. Kids have this sweet irresistible way of driving you crazy while you melt from the inside out from sheer love and joy watching them grow up.

They also make time shrivel up like a dried apple.

But don't ever let that stop you. All you need is a twist in your perspective. Must-attend business event coming up in town? Can't go because the babysitter is busy?

Here's a solution to consider.

SAVE THE DATE: This Sunday, June 14, at 7am PST, we have our next Tzolkin Open Source call. These are informal Q&A sessions for anyone interested in the concept of non linear time. Especially recommended for parents of... kids. See above.

  • A few weeks ago I was invited to give a talk to preschool children about how a book goes from an idea in a writer's head to an actual book you can hold in your hand. I brought in samples of my paperbacks, the hardcover photography book we published recently, my Kindle so they can see the eBook versions of each title, even a 16x24 archival print to demonstrate different paper thicknesses and textures, that they could touch and feel all they wanted. The kids loved it! They kept me there for nearly an hour, asking all kinds of questions.

The most touching aspect of the whole presentation, however, was what the kids did in class the next day. One of the children had asked about how books used to be in the old times, and I told them about clay tablets and cuneiform writing. So the entire class made their own clay tablets and stamped their own cuneiform glyphs!

  • Chocolate novel: We just talked about this. Want a sneak preview? Email me.

  • Interactive educational game: UI/UX design continues. We've made some critical adjustments in the interface that make all the difference between a "typical" gaming experience and the one that we want for you, which is "awesome," "totally absorbing," "mesmerizing." I hope we can live up to these lofty aims. The production files are now baking in the oven and will soon be ready for the developers.

If you have an iPad and want to be among the first beta testers, email me for more details.
