The Muse :: Issue Thirteen :: September 2013 :: Fall Flavors Life

The Muse

Autumn is not the same in all places. Our "fall" is the Southern Hemisphere's spring; and even here in the US, the post-summer months feel different in California than they do on the East Coast, the Midwest, the Southeast, or anywhere else.

But no matter where you are in the Northern Hemisphere, fall brings quieter, cooler flavors. The latent heat of summer's end, the quickened pulse of work, the brisk snap of school back in session.

Then there is the more profound meaning fall carries for all of us... the autumn of our lives. No matter where you are along your life's journey, be it high school, university, twenties, thirties, fourties or whatever decade, that third quarter of the human lifetime carries with it a fully ripened wisdom we should all be able to enjoy now, not later.

But how? you might say if you haven't quite gotten there yet, or if it's the furthest thing from your mind.

The extraordinary thing about the human experience is that we don't have to live through something to appreciate or learn from it. Some call it foresight, others call it respect, still others, humility. You will find it in the stories of your elders, between the lines of your closest relationships, under the blurred edges of generations.

And if you'd like to take it with you in a tightly wrapped little package, read The Seventh Crane.

Like many writers, I have my own blog. Which I routinely neglect in the name of fulfilling my life's work, which is writing stories.

Well, I've been whisked off my dainty feet by a veritable knight in shining digital armour. Joe Bunting, founder of The Write Practice, has granted me my own little fiefdom (read: guest blog) on his site. On September 1, my first blog post goes live.

It's titled "Turn on Your Muse" and it will be right on the home page.

Enjoy, and don't be bashful with the comments.

A lot of emotions tend to swirl around "free" books. Some authors are fiercely against giving away their work while others put Santa to shame.

Here be my motto: "All free books in moderation."

And so, for the next few days, my little publishing outfit is freeing up two of our titles to download to your Kindle, or your Kindle app if you've got one on your eReader:

August 31 through September 1, get "The Seventh Crane" FREE.

August 31 through September 2, get "Peasants Come Last" FREE.

The nice thing about free eBooks is that there is an infinite number of copies to go round... so do share! Spread the cheer and tell your friends who enjoy a good read. Or who haven't opened a book in ages and you want to save their literary sanity.

We're back with two more sessions of our "Living in Sacred Time" series, a series that explores the surprising beneficial effects of a slower, more natural time that the Maya call "sacred time". Something all of us could use a little more of in our crazy-busy lives!

This summer I presented sessions on Health & Well-being and Work & Career, which are available as recordings online, but it's the live discussion sessions that are the most fun. We keep them nice and limited in participant attendance to ensure everyone gets to talk.
