The Muse : May 2018

5 The Muse

It's already May. I remember this time last year, thinking the same exact thing. How do twelve months just evaporate?

I'm currently behind on everything. This issue of The Muse. Personal writing projects. My next book in the Max and the Code of Harvests series. Client work. Video projects. Our game. Emails. Social engagements. Skype calls with family.

But we eat healthy, always make time for exercise and snuggling with our little one, and sleep very well at night. It's not because of some anti-social or devil-may-care attitude about life. It's because: a.) I'm painfully aware just how many projects we have going on right now, how small our team is, and what it takes to get everything done; b.) I've seen first-hand how much larger organizations struggle the same way we do, even if on a larger scale; and c.) I'm not the only one. Everyone I know is always a little "behind."

It's (almost) all relative. What's "late"? Last year I was consulting with a very well-known tech firm. Our writing team was asked to do a massive audit of content. Everyone groaned. Then the early birds jumped in right away. I didn't. Not because I was lazy, but because I sensed the client had not quite finished defining the parameters yet. Sure enough, a few days later, more instructions came down the pipeline, making the job in fact easier. The early birds had to redo all their work.

If we're late to school in the morning, I tell my little one that yes, it's important to be on time but safety comes first. Meaning, mama won't speed just to get there a few minutes earlier (er, on time).

Few things are really that important. Unless, of course, you're on a critical deadline or catching a flight. :)

Enjoy your May. It'll be next year before you know it.

Have you heard about June 8th? It's World Oceans Day. Like Earth Day, except it's all about the oceans, which cover oh just 70% of the planet. And they *only* produce over half the oxygen we breathe (yes, seriously!).

And have you heard about June 9th? That's the day we March for the Ocean. In the past year, we've marched for science, for women, for our lives... on June 9th people all over the world will be taking to the streets to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect our oceans and marine life, which is in decline.

Affectionately known as M4O, March for the Ocean is organized by journalist and documentary producer David Helvarg and his team. Aria Luna and I have joined forces with M4O and are helping to raise funds to support their work. We're donating posters and greeting cards of her "Dragón del Mar," or "Sea Dragon," a gorgeous watercolor that's part of her new exhibit, all dedicated to the oceans and the creatures who live in them.

Set of Sea Dragon greeting cards

• 18x24 Sea Dragon poster

• and a special Limited M4O Edition poster, hand-signed and numbered by the little artist and with a quote from David Helvarg. We're printing only 100 of these.

Aria has gotten so into the whole protect-our-oceans thing she even sparked a collection of plastic and garbage at her school, which resulted in a presentation and discussion among the children about what they can each do to stop plastic consumption and all the littering.

Please help us spread this wave far and wide (all you have to do is forward this newsletter, and/or post this link to your social media networks: https://bit.ly/2G0lA0r.

All net proceeds support March for the Ocean. And once the march concludes, the real work begins—Aria and I will be right there with the M4O team, helping them raise funds for ocean conservation for the long term.

Thank you everyone who came to see me, or who just met me, at the International Chocolate Festival last month! I only managed to have one picture taken (thank you Doreen!), b/c the day was so busy, but for an author that's good news. We like to keep signing those books...!

I'm taking a break from doing events for a few months, in part to catch up on all those things enumerated above. But I do want to introduce to you someone I met at the chocolate festival. Fellow author Doreen Pendgracs.

She's Canadian (and therefore very cool! I've not met a single Canadian I didn't like), and a travel writer who's fallen head over heels into—pardon me, for! chocolate. She's done a two-volume set called Chocolatour: A Quest for the World’s Best Chocolate, of which Volume I was published in 2013 and Volume II is to be released late this year. If you like travel and you love chocolate, check out Doreen's books!
