A young girl develops a lifelong relationship with whooping cranes, the legendary but endangered migratory birds.  Six of these majestic cranes accompany her as she grows up, as fascinated with her as she is with them.  Their presence gives her a broader, deeper worldview that her human family can never provide.  

 

But they also learn from her—ultimately accepting her into their flock as she accepts them into hers.  For only then can she learn the secret of the missing seventh crane.
